Burgy Artworks

Building #100BC | Room #3345

Matthew Burgy is a sculptor of delicately balanced, metal kinetic artworks that gently move with the wind and manifest the powerful force of gravity. His sculptures are constructed from repurposed industrial materials–and a skillful level of patience! Inspired from careful observations of nature and personal meditations from his life, his works are emotive and experiential. Each sculpture shares a story that is truly moving.

In addition to his sculptures, Matthew creates jewelry that utilizes his kinetic metal sculpture techniques in extra delicate, miniature form. Matthew also often draws and paints the shapes and structures of trees, either through realistic or abstracted means, to explore new pathways of kinetic movement and sculptural forms in his metal works.

Matthew is currently working full time as an artist out of his studio and gallery at the Front Street studios in Dayton. Previously Matthew was the Interim Director of the Dayton Society of Artists, a museum educator and art instructor at the Dayton Art Institute for a total of 13 years, and an adjunct professor for the University of Dayton where he taught art education courses. Matthew has a B.F.A. degree in sculpture and printmaking as well as an M.Ed. degree in art education, both from Wright State University in Dayton. He started his professional career as an artist in 2005, and his work has been shown in over 50 gallery exhibitions including museum exhibitions at the Dayton Art Institute and the Ohio Craft Museum in Columbus.

In addition to creating work out of his studio, Matthew also teaches drawing and painting classes at Front Street and through the Dayton Society of Artists. He also does live painting and drawing demonstrations for Culture Works and for private events by request.
